おもし【重し・重石】
1 【重石】 〔押さえる物〕 a weight (for pressing down).

●漬物のおもし a (pressing) weight for making pickles

・2 キロの(重さの)おもし a 2-kilogram weight; a weight weighing 2 kg.

●彼のその一言で私は心のおもしがとれた. With that one remark [comment, word] of his, the weight was lifted from my heart [mind].

おもしに石を載せる put [place] a stone as a weight on sth; press sth under a stone; hold [weight] sth down with a stone

・シートを敷いて石をおもしにする lay out a tarpaulin and weight it down with stones.

おもしを載せる[する] put a weight on sth; weight sth down; hold sth down with a weight

・おもしを取る remove [take off] a weight 《from…》

・おもしを半分にする reduce a weight to half (of what it was)

・ウナギを捕る仕掛けにおもしをつけて水に沈めた. We attached a weight to the eel trap and sank it in the water.

2 【重し】 〔抑え〕 weight; influence; (a) restraint.

重しが利く have [carry] weight [influence] 《with…》

・地方の祭りには伝統と資金面と二重に重しがかかっていてなかなか冒険ができない. Regional festivals are restrained by two considerations: tradition and funds, and so organizers find it difficult to be adventurous.

・父親が亡くなり, 重しが外れると, 彼の放蕩(ほうとう)は歯止めが利かなくなっていった. When his father died and he was released from his influence, the controls on his profligacy ceased to work.
